Melrose High School Permanent Scholarship Fund

THE ARTHUR BREWSTER SCHOLARSHIP In March, 1980, the Lt. Norman Prince Post No. 1506 V.F.W. established a scholarship fund in the name of Patrolman Arthur Brewster of the City of Melrose Police Department. He retired from the Police Department on January 16, 1980, after twenty-eight years of service. This scholarship fund was established in his name in appreciation of his nine years of forming and leadership with the Melrose Junior Police program in Melrose.

Mr. Brewster was born in Medford on March 5, 1923, He was one of five children in the Brewster family. His father was both a police officer and a carpenter; his mother came from South Shields, England.

Mr. Brewster attended the Medford Public Schools as well as Medford High where he played both hockey and baseball. He also spent three and one-half years in the United States Navy during World War II.

He and his wife, the former Dorothy Botto of Melrose, have lived in Melrose for twenty-nine years. It was Mrs, Botto’s brother, Officer Joseph Botto, who talked Mr. Brewster into becoming a police officer here in Melrose. Prior to that time in his life he worked for Porter Lumber Company in Wakefield, the Friend Lumber Company of Medford, and for Pine Banks Park on the Melrose-Malden boundary.

The Brewsters have two children. Their daughter, Mrs. Frederick Dinardi of Melrose, was a graduate of Melrose High School. Their son, Dennis, lives in Woburn and is a graduate of St. Mary’s School in Melrose and the Don Bosco High School in Boston, Mr. and Mrs. Brewster have five grandchildren–three grandsons and two granddaughters.

Since retiring from the Melrose Police Department, Mr. Brewster has worked from time to time at his trade which is carpentry. They still make their home here in Melrose.

THE MELROSE HIGH SCHOOL PERMANENT SCHOLARSHIP ORGANIZATION is proud to offer this Scholarship as a tribute to a man who has shown such unusual interest in the youth of this City through his efforts with the Melrose Junior Police program as week ads being the Melrose Police Department Safety Officer. He gave of his time and talent in the belief that young people could benefit through experiencing the mutual respect that exists between the Local police and the community which they serve and protect.
