CLASS OF 1904 SCHOLARSHIP On October 22, 1965, Mr. William L. Orton, the only surviving trustee of the Class of 1904 Scholarship Fund visited Kenneth R. Norris at Melrose High School to inquire about the funds of this class. He wished to know the status of account held by the High School, Me had and expressed a desire to have the funds turned over to the Melrose High School Permanent Scholarship Fund as a permanent memorial to the Class of 1904. At the time of his visit, Mr. Orton Lived in South Harwich, Massachusetts.

Subsequently, it was ascertained that the funds of the Class of 1904 consisted of certain Dreyfus Fund Stocks and a small amount of cash on deposit in a Savings bank.

On November 8, 1965, Mr. Orton wrote to A.I. Dixon, Principal of Melrose High School, authorizing him to transfer the Class of 1904 funds over to the Melrose High School Permanent Scholarship Fund. On January 7, 1966, these funds were given to the treasurer, Mr. George W. Newhall, in accordance with the terms of a trust agreement dated November 18, 1965.

In 1977, the Melrose High School Permanent Scholarship Fund received $4,000 from the estate of a former member of the Class of 1904, George R. Farnum. This money was given to ten senior students in the graduating class of 1977. Mr. Farnum was a renowned Boston Lawyer who died in 1970, At the time of his death, he Left bronze Statue of Abraham Lincoln to Melrose High School.
