THE JAMES M. ROONEY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

James M. Rooney was born in Buffalo, New York on December 8, 1916. A graduate of South Park High School, Buffalo, he received his B.S. degree from Canisius College in that city and his D.D.S. degree from Georgetown University Dental School, Washington, D.C. in 1943 with a commission as an ensign in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps. After a tour of duty at the Dental Clinic in the Brooklyn Naval Yard he was assigned to the U.S. Storm King on transport duty in the Pacific. Upon his discharge from the Navy in 1946 he started a Dental Practice in Bronxville, N.Y. and in 1948 moved to Massachusetts to practice in Malden where he remained until his death in 1966.

He continued his association with the Navy as a Reserve Officer in a Dental Unit stationed at the Boston Naval Yard and attained the rank of Commander.

Dr. Rooney was a dedicated family man. He and his wife Mona (Kelly) had six children, five of whom graduated from Melrose High School. He particularly enjoyed the vacations which he spent at his cottage on Lake Sunapee, N.H. and participated enthusiastically in summer and winter sports. He was an avid skier and fisherman.

He was a strong believer in the value of a good education. It would have particularly pleased him to have a scholarship established in his memory as he himself was the beneficiary of scholarship help in both his college and Dental School years.

THE MELROSE HIGH SCHOOL PERMANENT SCHOLARSHIP FUND congratulates you upon receiving this memorial scholarship. The founders of this Scholarship will always be interested in your plans and progress.
