THE JOHN P. HAUGHN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The John P. Haughn Memorial Scholarship Fund was founded in July, 1991, and sponsored by family and friends.

John was born in 1973 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and moved to Melrose as a youth. John was the son of Mr. & Mrs. John A. Haughn, Jr.

Most of his life was spent as a student. He attended the Roosevelt School as well as Melrose Junior and Senior High Schools. He graduated in 1991 in the top third of his class. He was a member of the Law Club

John’s major interest was the creative arts. He expressed himself through his poetry and journals. He and several of his friends wrote and published a wrestling newsletter. He was also an artist. He was a regular participant in the student Art Festival. His art work had also been printed in the Melrose Junior High Fine Arts Department calendar.

Several months prior to his death, John taught himself to play the guitar and formed a band with several friends. He wrote the lyrics for several songs they played.

Other interests he had enjoyed included Little League Baseball (both as a player and as a coach’s assistant), Pop Warner Football, reading, tennis, fishing, basketball, and going to the beach. He also enjoyed the music of the “sixties”, particularly the Beatles. He was an avid Red Sox and Bruins fan.

He had worked part-time, first, as a paperboy, and during his high school years at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.

John died as a result of an automobile accident. He had planned to further his education in the writing aspect of the communications field.

This scholarship is awarded in John’s memory hoping that his spirit of integrity and creativity will be carried on by the youth of Melrose.
