PHI THETA XI
In April 1903, when sororities and fraternities were an integral part of high school activities, a group of six girls founded Phi Theta Xi. An alumnae group was separate from the active high school sorority. In 1920, the active and alumnae groups merged. In addition to providing its members with warm fellowship, the sorority has traditionally supported the community with its charitable endeavors.

To raise monies, Theta held a Country Fair for 24 years and since 1975, has held a Flea Festival each spring. An auction in the fall since 1979 has been another major fund raiser, Other activities to benefit community causes have included dances, Copper Coffees, sponsorship of the Columbus Boys’ Choir, musicals, theatre parties, fashion shows, rummage sales and bridge parties.

Theta’s philanthropic endeavors have included contributions to the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, the Melrose Y.M.C.A. and various other Local charitable and civic organizations. The sorority has supported the Melrose High School Permanent Scholarship Fund since 1966. Phi Theta Xi’s objective in comradeship and charity have made the sorority an integral part of the community.

THE MELROSE HIGH SCHOOL PERMANENT SCHOLARSHIP FUND congratulates you upon receiving this memorial scholarship. The founders of this scholarship will always be interested in your plans and progress.
