Robert F. Lucas

Robert F. Lucas, Esq. was a respected attorney, community leader, and dedicated public servant whose professional and civic contributions shaped Melrose for decades. Born on November 11, 1935, in Beacon Falls, Connecticut, he was the son of Otto F. Lucas and Augusta H. Schuster Lucas. He grew up in Connecticut and graduated from The Taft School in Watertown in 1952. He continued his education at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, earning his undergraduate degree in 1956, and went on to receive his Juris Doctor from Boston University School of Law in 1959.

Robert built a distinguished 45‑year legal career as a principal of Nigro, Pettepit & Lucas, LLP in Wakefield. Known for his integrity, professionalism, and commitment to his clients, he became a trusted figure in the local legal community.

His dedication extended far beyond his law practice. For 45 years, Robert was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Melrose, where he served as Chairman of the Administrative Board, Trustee of the Church, and sang in the choir. His leadership and service were central to the life of the congregation.

Robert also held numerous roles within the legal and fraternal communities. He served as Vice President of the Massachusetts Bar Association, Past Vice President of the Middlesex County Bar Association, and Past President of the Malden Bar Association. His Masonic involvement was extensive: he was a member and Past Master of Fidelity Lodge AF&AM, Past District Deputy Grand Master, Past High Priest of Waverly Royal Arch Chapter, and Past District Deputy High Priest. He received both the Joseph E. Warren Medal and the Henry Price Medal and was a 33rd‑degree Scottish Rite Mason. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Scottish Rite Learning Center for Dyslexia in Lexington.

In Melrose civic life, Robert played a significant role. He served on the Board of Appeals for 25 years, including 20 years as Chair, and was a past City Solicitor. He was also a founding Trustee of the Melrose High School Permanent Scholarship Fund, helping establish a legacy of educational support for generations of Melrose students. Among his many accomplishments, one of his proudest was being named Melrose Babe Ruth Coach of the Year, reflecting his love of mentoring young people.

Robert shared 48 years of marriage with his wife, Regina Abbiati Lucas. He was the devoted father of Robert F. Lucas Jr. and his wife Rachel of Acton, David R. Lucas and his wife Melissa of Melrose, and Jennifer J. Lucas and her fiancé Steven Young of Belmont. He was the brother of Reed Gogan of Waterbury, Connecticut, and the late Ray Gogan, and the cherished grandfather of Caroline, Jason, and Will Lucas.

His life reflects a deep commitment to family, faith, community, and public service — a legacy that continues to resonate throughout Melrose.
