THE SHIRLEY G. SPURR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND was established in 1984.

She was born June 4, 1888 and was a life long Melrose resident until her death on March 3, 1973.

Mrs. Spurr was active in the DAR, Serving as a Regent of Old State House Chapter, State Chairman of National Defense and for two terms was State Chairman of Resolutions and Served in the National Society as National Vice Chairman for National Defense for two terms and six terms as National Vice Chairman of National Resolutions. She was past President of Massachusetts ex-Regents DAR Club, a state historian and state councilor for two terms.

Mrs. Spurr held membership in the Society of Mayflower Descendants and of the Ancient and Honorary Artillery, Melrose Women’s Club, the Women Republican Club and was past President of Community Associates and a member of the First Congregational Church of Melrose.

Mrs. Spurr, an avid gardener, was named honorary judge for life by the board of the American Iris Society in 1970 in recognition of her dedication to the iris flower. She also had an iris officially named for her. She was regional Vice President of the American Iris Society, Accredited Judge of American Hemerocallis Society, member of the New England Lily Society, the American Hosta Society and she also held life membership in the Massachusetts Horticultural society and was a member of the British Iris Society.
