Steven H. Parker

March 11, 1953 – July 13, 2011

Melrose High School, Class of 1971

Steve was blessed with a passion and talent for journalism. At MHS, Steve was feature editor of the student newspaper, The Imprint. During his studies at the University of Maine/Orono, Steve was the editor of The Campus. He was proud that The Campus was named the best all-around college newspaper in the Northeast. One of Steve’s early career accomplishments included working as photographer, reporter, and then Editor of the Melrose Free Press. His work was honored by the Massachusetts Press Association.

During Steve’s career, journalism began to evolve and expand its definition as well as its boundaries, and his focus changed to marketing and public relations. An entrepreneur, Steve founded and was CEO of Parker Communications, where he used his talents in strategic communications in social media to promote emerging technology companies. His clients, colleagues and employees respected his writing talent, endless patience, extraordinary fairness, and his creative brilliance.

Steve always loved his hometown, Melrose. He took pride in being an active member of his community. During high school, Steve was a volunteer making weekly trips to Roxbury to tutor students. He was always interested in politics and supported numerous causes. As an adult, Steve acted on his democratic beliefs by becoming a candidate for alderman. Being privileged to serve on the Melrose Board of Alderman was one of Steve’s proudest accomplishments.

There were other passions in Steve’s life. He loved music and was a self-taught guitar player. He performed in country western bands but playing rock ‘n roll and blues were his love. He enjoyed reading a ‘good book.’ Steve often dreamed of writing a book one day. A father and grandfather, family was Steve’s greatest joy. He had a fantastic sense of humor! Friends remember his wonderful laugh…and his family always pictures his very warm smile.

To celebrate Steve’s life, his wife, sister, daughters, and grandchildren established this scholarship in his honor. It is their hope that this scholarship helps to enable recipient(s) to pursue their personal dream. We wish you every success in your education and your future.
