The Warren & Margaret Nash Memorial Scholarship honors two remarkable educators whose lives were shaped by language, learning, and a deep commitment to Melrose students.

Warren Nash, a Harvard graduate, led the Romance Languages Department at Melrose High School. Margaret “Brownie” Nash, a UNH graduate affectionately nicknamed for her maiden name, Brown, headed the Hispanic/Latin Department. Both were beloved teachers who devoted their careers, and much of their personal lives, to their students and their families. While teaching at MHS, Warren also served as the primary caregiver for his mother, and both he and Brownie made Melrose their lifelong home.

For decades, Warren and Brownie worked side by side, each leading their respective language departments. Neither had married, choosing instead to pour their time and energy into teaching. When they retired from MHS, and after Warren’s mother passed, they finally allowed themselves a new chapter. They married, and with their newfound freedom, set out to travel the world together. Between them, they spoke or understood eight to nine languages; Warren alone was fluent in or familiar with six. Their travels became a celebration of everything they had taught for so many years.

The Warren & Margaret Nash Memorial Scholarship reflects their shared belief in the power of language to open doors, broaden understanding, and connect people across cultures. It is awarded to a student who has shown dedication to foreign languages and who aspires to pursue a language major in college. 

Their legacy continues through this scholarship, supporting future linguists who will carry forward the passion that Warren and Brownie brought to Melrose High School and to the world.
